SafeWise looked at crime data and found that there are many safe places to live in California.
For its 10th annual Safest Cities study, SafeWise, a website that reviews security products, looked at FBI crime data for cities in California. There were a total of 77 places that met the requirements to be ranked. Notably, some of the most expensive areas of California didn’t make the list this year.
The study found that even though serious crime has gone down across the whole state, many people still think that crime is a big problem in California.
SafeWise says that 64% of Californians are very worried about violent crime happening to them. That’s the third highest level of worry in the country. The study does say that violent crime went down in California last year. There are 4.2 serious crimes for every 1,000 people in California. SafeWise found that this is higher than the national rate of 4.0 but lower than the rate of 4.4 the previous year.
Rancho Santa Margarita, Aliso Viejo, and Yorba Linda were named as the three safest cities in California. Orange County is home to all three towns. Orange County towns took seven of the top ten spots on the list, making them the most popular.
Based on the study, Rancho Santa Margarita was the safest city in the Golden State. There were 0.4 violent crimes and 4.8 property crimes per 1,000 people. There are 46,889 people living in the city.
The study found that Yorba Linda and Rancho Santa Margarita were the only two cities that did not report any murders or rapes. Less than three violent crimes per 1,000 people were reported in all of the safest towns.
FBI crime data was used to make the lists. Through the FBI Summary Reporting System and the National Incident-Based Reporting System, cities and towns all over the country report the information on their own time. The FBI’s most latest report on crimes that happened in 2022 came out in October 2023. The company says that SafeWise also used population limits in its reports.
These are the top 20 safest cities in California for 2024, according to SafeWise:

Property crimes happened 25.3 times for every 1,000 people in the state, which was 23% more than the national rate of 20.7.
The study found that violent crime rates were only 1.7 per 1,000 people in the safest cities and property crime rates were 12.8 per 1,000 people.
An interesting study found that about 64% of Californians were very worried about violent crime happening to them.
Based on SafeWise, people in the Golden State were least worried about gun violence when it came to crime and safety. In 2023, there were 51 deadly shootings in California. One more than in 2022.
