Darren Waller decided on his NFL future and announced on Sunday that he will be leaving the game.
Following nine seasons in the NFL, including one Pro Bowl participation, the tight end for the New York Giants declared on social media that he was retiring.
In a video posted on his YouTube account, Waller, 31, declared that “the passion has slowly been fading.”
“I’ve made the decision to give up football,” he added on Instagram separately. To God, I say thank you and what a voyage. We went much beyond what I had ever dreamed possible! Very appreciative of everyone I’ve met and made memories with along the road. There is yet a good deal of life to inhabit. I love everyone of you. At peace.
First to report on Waller telling the Giants he was retiring was the NFL Network.
We think Darren is a terrific player and guy. The group added, “We only wish him the best.”
Waller has had a crazy eighteen months.
March 2023 saw him traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Giants, shortly after tying the knot with WNBA player Kelsey Plum.
In 2023 he played 12 games for the Giants, but his 52 catches for 552 yards and a touchdown were below average.
He was said to be retiring from the NFL following the season. Then word leaked out that, after hardly a year of marriage, he was divorcing Plum. Then he dropped music, seeming to promote the new direction he was headed.
In his video, Waller claimed to be doing well and to be looking forward to the next phases of his life.
The retirement of Waller will cost the Giants $2.5 million in dead money in addition to saving $11.6 million in cap money. The team seemingly got ready for this day in April when they selected tight end Theo Johnson out of Penn State.
