Donald Trumpβs presidential campaign has received a significant boost of $50 million (£39.5 million) from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, according to a federal filing disclosed on Thursday.
The Super-PAC fund, βMAGA Inc,β reported to the Federal Election Commission that it raised over $68 million from donors last month. Reuters revealed that Mr. Mellon, an heir to the Pittsburgh-based Mellon banking family, contributed $50 million. Additionally, billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein donated another $10 million.
US media reported that Mr. Mellon made his donation the day after Trump was convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records related to his New York hush-money trial.
Mr. Mellon has also been the largest donor to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., giving at least $20 million to the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC American Values.
Super-PACs are independent βpolitical action committeesβ that can raise unlimited funds to support election candidates.
The Mellon donation has enabled pro-Trump allies to outspend US President Joe Bidenβs supporters on campaigning in recent weeks.
Mr. Mellon, who resides in Wyoming and is rarely photographed, is an amateur pilot who has invested in and led transport-related companies. Forbes estimates the Mellon family’s worth at around $14.1 billion.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that billionaire Mike Bloomberg has donated nearly $20 million to Biden-supporting Super-PACs. This includes $19 million to an independent pro-Biden group known as Future Forward (FF PAC) and $900,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, a joint effort of the Biden campaign and Democratic Party committees.
The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Thursday, the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC reported raising around $280,000 last month, with none of it coming from Mr. Mellon.
