A minivan transporting 14 puppies from West Virginia collided with a utility pole and overturned in Connecticut on Thursday morning, resulting in injuries to several dogs, authorities reported.
The crash occurred around 6 a.m. in Woodstock, a rural town bordering Massachusetts, according to fire officials. The puppies, belonging to various breeds, were secured in crates in the back of the minivan. While electrical wires fell onto the vehicle, they did not cause any injuries.
The driver sustained minor injuries, but several puppies were examined by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, one puppy had to be euthanized, and several others were taken to an emergency veterinary center in Massachusetts. The majority of the puppies were transported to a local animal shelter.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
Fire Chief Eric Young stated that the driver was en route from a West Virginia animal rescue to deliver the puppies to new homes in the region.
βThe driver was understandably shaken by the accident,β Young said. βHe was very upset with himself.β
Young mentioned that after the driver informed firefighters about the puppies, some responders were hesitant to check on them, fearing they might find injured dogs. Although some of the crates were damaged, most of the puppies appeared to be in good condition.
Officials confirmed that after examination, the puppies would proceed to their new homes.
