A new poll shows that more than half of Joe Biden’s followers are casting their vote for the president in order to keep Donald Trump from again becoming president.
A new CBS/YouGov poll found that 54% of Democratic incumbent voters want to support Biden because they don’t like Trump. This is up from 47% in a similar poll done in March, before the presumptive Republican candidate was found guilty of business fraud by a New York jury.
27% of Biden fans say they are supporting the president because they like him, which is less than the 31% who said they were doing so in March. 19% say they are supporting him because he is the Democratic candidate for president.
The study comes at a time when the Biden campaign has been directly attacking Trump more than ever. They are pointing to the former president’s felony conviction and a long list of other problems. Last week, Biden said that his predecessor was “reckless and dangerous” for saying that his New York trial was unfair and that losing the 2020 race had made him “crazy.”
The race for president is still very close; a new poll from CBS shows that Biden and Trump are pretty evenly matched across the country and in key swing states. Most likely voters (50%) back Trump, while most likely voters (49%) back Biden. These numbers are switched for likely voters in key states.
Most polls taken in the last few months have shown that Trump is ahead of Biden. However, there is some evidence of a small shift toward the president since Biden was found guilty of a felony. Trump is on trial for three other felonies, including keeping secret papers and trying to rig the 2020 election. He is likely to be sentenced in the New York case on July 11, 2021.
But according to the CBS study, 55% of likely voters say that Trump’s conviction won’t affect their choice for president, while 28% say it will. Trump’s fans have given him a lot of money since the trial, but the poll found that only 14% of his voters are supporting him because of his conviction. The vast majority said it didn’t affect their decision.
Nine out of ten Trump voters think that the former president was charged because of what the Biden administration did, not what local prosecutors did, the study found.
According to the study, the main things that drive people to vote are the state of the US economy, inflation, the health of democracy, and crime.
