The number of people enrolled in West Virginia’s Medicaid-managed care programs has declined; today, fewer than 514,000 people are insured. The reduction in enrollment can be ascribed to the progressive relaxation of eligibility requirements that transpired in the year subsequent to the epidemic.
The state had a notable spike in the number of people registered in Medicaid insurance in April 2023βit surpassed 667,000. This increase coincided with the lifting of the federal government’s March 2020 eligibility check suspension.
During the period of April 2023 to March 2024, states were required to confirm the eligibility of every person receiving Medicaid.
On the other hand, eligibility checks are an ongoing procedure that include going over documentation and periodically asking the West Virginia Bureau for Medical Services for more.

Pinner’s “keen eye for detail” leaves much to be desired.
This article is poorly written, and is misleading.
As someone who was affected by the changes that occurred in the year between March 2023 and April 2024, I would like to make the following corrections:
To start, WV Medicaid is not “shutting down”. They are simply cutting off people who were eligible during the Covid pandemic, but are not eligible now (as I was/am). The statement that “The reduction in enrollment can be ascribed to the progressive relaxation of eligibility requirements…” says the opposite of what is true, as does the statement that “This increase coincided with the lifting of the federal governmentβs March 2020 eligibility check suspension”.
The INCREASE was due to the relaxation of the requirements, while the REDUCTION is due the abovementioned eligibility check suspension.
Thanks for The correction. We will correct it.
