CHARLESTON, WV (WVDN) — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has aligned with a Nebraska-led coalition of 23 states to oppose the Biden administration’s newly proposed energy-efficiency standards for stoves and ovens. According to Morrisey, these regulations will increase the cost of kitchen appliances across the nation.
“Once again, this administration demonstrates a lack of empathy and consideration for the average consumer, who will undoubtedly be most affected by the price hikes resulting from these new regulations,” Morrisey stated. “The unelected bureaucrats in the Department of Energy are overstepping by imposing stringent controls on kitchen appliances to push Biden’s radical green agenda.”
These new energy-efficiency standards for stoves and ovens come on the heels of similar regulations for household refrigerators and freezers. The rule for stoves and ovens was introduced through a rarely used procedure known as a “direct final rule,” which allows a federal agency to bypass the usual process of soliciting public comments before finalizing a regulation. The coalition’s comment letter urges the Department of Energy (DoE) to allow states and consumers the opportunity to review and critique the rule before it takes effect.
Attorney General Morrisey also recently joined a coalition of 18 attorneys general in submitting a comment letter to the DoE, expressing serious concerns about the agency’s proposed regulations for refrigerators and freezers.
In 2023, Morrisey had participated in a letter to the DoE addressing similar concerns over new rules for residential clothes washers.
Attorney General Morrisey’s recent coalition includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
