Beckley recently honored one of its most beloved hometown heroes with the 4th Annual Bill Withers Music Festival at Bill Withers Plaza. The festival was a lively celebration, featuring performances by seven West Virginia musical groups, along with food and merchandise vendors, an art competition, and activities for all ages.
Although this is only the fourth year of the festival, Bill Withers’ music has been cherished for decades, resonating with fans across generations.
Judy Patterson attended the festival with her grandson, Jacob Maatan, and shared their special connection to Withers.
“My grandson Jacob is Bill Withers’ number one fan, introduced to his music by his middle school music teacher. We have a personal connection because my mother-in-law, Pauline Morris, grew up with Bill Withers in Slab Fork and they played in The Rocks together. We’ve been fans since his first recording and wouldn’t miss this festival,” Patterson said.
This year’s festival held special significance as the Bill Withers Committee celebrated reaching their fundraising goal for a bronze statue of Bill Withers. The statue, designed by West Virginia artist Frederick Hightower, is expected to be installed later this year.
