Gov. Jim Justice announced on Friday that a coal miner was killed earlier this week in northern West Virginia. William “Joe” Crandall died in an accident at Arch Resources’ ACI Tygart Valley Mine in Taylor County on Monday. This incident marks the second mining fatality in the state within the past month.
Earlier in July, a 33-year-old woman was killed at the Wyco Surface Mine, which is located near the border of Raleigh and Wyoming counties.
Gov. Justice described the mining profession as both honorable and challenging, emphasizing the respect and gratitude owed to miners. “Joe Crandall died trying to make your lives and my life better. We should always remember that. Please keep him in your prayers,” Justice said during a news briefing.
The accident involved power haulage equipment, such as shuttle cars, scoops, locomotives, and front-end loaders, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
Senator Joe Manchin, an independent from West Virginia, also expressed his condolences, stating, “His bravery will never be forgotten,” and offered prayers for Crandall’s family.
This tragedy is the sixth mining fatality in the U.S. this year and the third in West Virginia, as reported by the MSHA.
