NEW YORK β Cucumbers transported to 14 states are being recalled by a Florida firm because of a possible salmonella contamination.
Shipped entire cucumbers between May 17 and May 21, 2024, are being recalled by Delray, Florida-based Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. The following states received these cucumbers distribution: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Following notification by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture that a product sample had tested positive for salmonella, the recall was started. The Food and Drug Administration published a notice with this information on Saturday. Especially in young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems, Salmonella can result in serious and occasionally deadly illnesses.
Salmonella-infected healthy people may have fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach ache. Rarely can the infection get into the bloodstream and cause more serious health problems. Whole genome sequencing is being done by the FDA right now to see if this sample is connected to the continuing salmonella outbreak investigation. Food safety lawyer Bill Marler said the agency is currently looking into one active incident that has already impacted 141 people and the source of contamination is yet unknown.
The dark green, 1.5 to 2 inch diameter, five to nine inch length recalled cucumbers were packed in bulk cartons. Cucumbers, English and miniature, are not covered by this recall. Customers that bought the recalled cucumbers are urged to either return them for a refund or throw them away.
Customers may reach Fresh Start Produce at 1-888-364-2993 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
