Two children are recovering in a Connecticut Intensive Care Unit after police officers intervened to stop their father from allegedly trying to drown them at a West Haven beach early Saturday morning.
The incident unfolded when a patrol officer from the West Haven Police Department noticed an SUV parked at Dawson Avenue Beach around 2:30 a.m. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the officer heard screaming coming from the water, prompting immediate action.
According to investigators, the officer discovered Romney Desronvil, 41, in the water with two young children. “As the officer entered the water, the adult male continued to drift further away with the children, all while screaming at the responding officers to ‘stay back,'” the West Haven Police Department said in a statement. “It was obvious at this point that the male…was deliberately drowning his children.”
Reinforcements from the police and fire departments quickly arrived, entering the water and going as far as 100 yards from the shore to assist. They managed to separate the children, both under 3 years old, from their father and bring them back to shore, where they administered life-saving measures before rushing them to the hospital.
Later that day, West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer reported that the children were showing signs of improvement but remained in critical condition. She praised the bravery of Officers Williamson and Miller, crediting them with saving the children’s lives. “They had guardian angels this morning,” Borer said.
Romney Desronvil, a resident of Queens, New York, was arrested and charged with two counts each of attempted manslaughter and risk of injury. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming, according to the police. Attorney information for Desronvil was not immediately available.
This harrowing incident highlights the swift and courageous actions of the West Haven Police Department and fire personnel, whose efforts undoubtedly saved the lives of two young children under extreme circumstances.
