West Virginia Gear Up began its summer academy on Wednesday at Glenville State University. Sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative, the academy offers high school freshmen and sophomores a unique opportunity to live on a college campus, attend classes, and explore potential careers or majors.
Jason Luyster, the camp director, expressed his enthusiasm for giving back to students, many of whom, like himself, are first-generation college students. “I’m a first-generation college student, and many of these students are first-generation college students, so the opportunity to give them hope, give them something that they’re shooting for, a goal that they’re aiming for, and then help prepare and arm them with the tools and information and resources that they need, not only to take steps towards that goal but to be successful in that endeavor,” said Luyster.
Xavin Hale, a Gear Up camper, shared his appreciation for the variety of activities available at the camp. “I like how flexible all the counselors are with everyone’s tastes and their needs and wants,” said Hale. “They all work together, and they all try to fit everything together and work it all in.” Now in his second year at Gear Up U, Hale noted that the camp has helped him step out of his comfort zone and expand his circle of friends.
Ashton Ferguson, a camp counselor, and former participant in Gear Up throughout her high school years, highlighted the social benefits of the camp. “They come in here with friend groups, and then at the end of the camp, they have a totally new friend group with people from different schools and different counties,” said Ferguson.
The biggest fireworks display in West Virginia will return to Beckley on July 5, 2024
At the opening ceremony, Glenville State President Mark Manchin made a special announcement, offering scholarships to all participants. “I signed about 180 scholarships for everybody participating in GUU to come to Glenville State University. A $500 scholarship, but you come and see me, I’ll make it a thousand dollars. That’s every year, that’s not just year one, we’ll double it. Anybody who brings that certificate in, we’ll double it,” said Manchin. “We’re pleased here at Glenville that we are now the lowest tuition in the state of West Virginia four-year institutions, and that’s a consideration.”
The Gear Up summer academy at Glenville State University continues to provide valuable experiences and opportunities for high school students across West Virginia, preparing them for future academic and career success.
