CHARLESTON, WV (WVPREPBB)Β – Local leaders have released statements regarding the apparent shots fired incident at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice urged the public in a Twitter post to βstop what you are doing and pray for President Trump, the Trump family, and the Secret Service and law enforcement around them.”
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, along with his wife Britainy, expressed their concerns, stating, βWe are praying for the safety and health of the former president. Violence is never the answer. Never.β
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also took to Twitter, saying, βFran and I are praying for President Trump, his family, and our country.β
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia released a statement, βPraying for President Trump, everyone at the rally, and our country.β
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio said, βConnie and I are relieved that President Trump is safe, and are praying for the health and safety of all those attending the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania tonight, and for our country. Weβre grateful to the law enforcement who responded immediately. Political violence is completely unacceptable and has no place in our democracy.β
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey posted on Twitter, βThe whole state of West Virginia is praying for you, President Trump! We are rooting for a quick recovery after this heinous act. We stand by you!β
The Kanawha County Commission expressed on Facebook that they are βkeeping President Trump, his family, members of the secret service and all others who may have been affected at todayβs events outside of Pittsburgh in their thoughts.β
West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin released a statement saying:
βOur thoughts and prayers are with Donald Trump, his family, and the other victims of this despicable and cowardly act that took place in Butler, Pennsylvania today. Such acts of violence are not only an assault on an individual but an act of violence against our entire country and our democratic system of government. In the United States, we decide our elections with ballots, not with bullets. I encourage all West Virginians and all Americans to recommit ourselves to democratic principles and to the noble ideals that have made our country a beacon of hope around the world.
In times like this, marked with so much division and acrimony, we do well to remember the words of President Lincoln who reminded us, βWe are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.’β
