GRANTSVILLE, Md. (WVPREPBB) – A tragic accident in Garrett County, Maryland, resulted in the death of a West Virginia man on Tuesday.
According to the Maryland State Police, troopers from the McHenry Barrack responded to a vehicle collision on New Germany Road in Grantsville at approximately 4:51 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a Toyota Tacoma that had veered off the road into a wooded area and a Freightliner utility truck parked roadside.
The driver of the Tacoma, identified as James Thomas Shillingburg III from Ridgely, West Virginia, was found entrapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Charles Meyers of Sharpsburg, Maryland, who was driving the Freightliner, was unharmed.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Tacoma was traveling southbound when it failed to navigate a right-hand curve, crossed the yellow lines, and collided with the northbound Freightliner. The Tacoma then continued across the northbound lane, went off the road, and descended an embankment into the wooded area.
The Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the collision. They received assistance on the scene from the Maryland Natural Resources Police, the Grantsville Fire Department, and the Northern Garrett Rescue Squad.
