Melania Trump was not present at the Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, but she deeply felt the impact of the assassination attempt on her husband’s life, which resulted in the deaths of an attendee and the shooter.
On Sunday, Melania released a statement expressing her sympathies for the families of those injured in the crowd and the one bystander who was killed.
“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change,” the former first lady said in her statement.
“A monster who saw my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to extinguish Donald’s passion—his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration,” she wrote. “The core facets of my husband’s life—his human side—were buried beneath the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times.”
Melania, who has remained quite private during Trump’s recent campaign, implored Americans not to let politics overshadow our humanity.
“Let us not forget that differing opinions, policies, and political games are inferior to love,” she said. “We all want a world where respect is paramount, family is first, and love transcends. We can realize this world again. Each of us must demand to get it back. We must insist that respect fills the cornerstone of our relationships again,” she added.

Following treatment, former President Donald Trump is preparing to attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Officials said the man suspected of opening fire on the Butler crowd was a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania.
