Aldi has issued a recall for several fresh produce items due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections. The recall, announced online Monday, affects green peppers, jalapeños, and green beans sold under the “Freshire Farms” label.
The affected products include:
- 8-ounce bags of jalapeños with UPC number 4099100087680
- 16-ounce three-pack bags of green peppers with UPC number 4099100087598
- 16-ounce bags of green beans with UPC number 4099100087826
This recall is limited to products sold in five states: Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Although Aldi has over 2,000 stores across the country, this recall only impacts the specified states.
The company initiated the recall “in cooperation with Wiers Farm, Inc. and R.S. Hanline Co Inc. and out of an abundance of caution.” Aldi emphasized its commitment to product safety and integrity, urging customers to either discard the affected products immediately or return them to their local store for a full refund.
“ALDI sincerely regrets the inconvenience and concern caused as a result of this recall,” the notice states.
Customers with questions can contact R.S. Hanline Co Inc. at 1-888-484-4834 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you experience any illness after consuming the recalled products, seek medical attention promptly.
Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, can lead to severe symptoms, even in otherwise healthy individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that out of approximately 1,600 annual cases, around 260 are fatal. Symptoms often start within 24 hours of consuming contaminated food and may include diarrhea and vomiting. In more severe cases, symptoms like fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures may occur.
Pregnant individuals might experience mild or no symptoms, but invasive listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or severe infection in the newborn.
While Listeria contamination is a common reason for food recalls, other pathogens like salmonella and norovirus, or issues related to undeclared allergens, can also prompt such actions.
Aldi has not reported any illnesses related to this recall but advises customers to take precautionary measures.
