Kentucky-based AW Farms has issued a recall for several hot dog products after they were found to have bypassed proper inspection. The recall, initiated on Monday, July 15, affects three ready-to-eat hot dog items that did not receive inspection from the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The FSIS discovered the issue following a notification from a state public health partner regarding these products. An investigation determined that the hot dogs were produced and distributed without federal inspection.
The following products are included in the recall:
- 10-pound boxes containing two 5-pound vacuum-packed packages of “FRENCH CITY FOODS 6″ 12-1 HOTDOGS.”
- 10-pound boxes containing two 5-pound vacuum-packed packages of frozen “PORK, BEEF, DEXTROSE, SALT, SUGAR MAPLE GEO BROWN ALL MEAT HOTDOGS.”
- 10-pound boxes containing two 5-pound vacuum-packed packages of frozen “BEEF, DEXTROSE, SALT, SUGAR MAPLE GEO BROWN ALL BEEF HOTDOGS.”
In total, 6,900 pounds of these products are being recalled. They have “packed on” dates from approximately May 30 onward and bear the establishment number EST. 47635 inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each product has a shelf life of around 45 days.
These items were not available for purchase by regular consumers in grocery stores but were shipped to establishments in Ohio and West Virginia. The FSIS is concerned that some products may still be in restaurants’ or hotels’ refrigerators or freezers. These establishments are advised not to serve the recalled hot dogs and to either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
As of the announcement on July 15, no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products have been reported. Individuals concerned about possible reactions or illnesses should contact a healthcare provider.
Federal inspection ensures the safety of food items produced for use throughout the U.S., with common recall issues including undeclared allergens, food-borne illnesses like listeria and salmonella, and foreign objects. The FSIS oversees the inspection of commercially available meat, poultry, and egg products, ensuring they meet safety standards as mandated by the Federal Meat Inspection Act.
