MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WVPREPBB) – If you’ve been driving around, you’ve likely seen other drivers sporting custom license plates that show off a university or professional sports team. Custom plates allow drivers to prove their vehicle’s legal registration while displaying pride in their team. Here are the states that offer custom license plates featuring West Virginia University (WVU):
Maryland
With the Maryland state line only about 30 miles east of Morgantown, itβs no surprise that some fans and alumni have moved east and still want to sport the old gold and blue. The Maryland Department of Transportation offers a custom WVU plate for $25, in addition to the standard $135 two-year registration fee for passenger vehicles.
Virginia
In Cavalier and Hokie territory, Mountaineer fans love to show their support for WVU. The Commonwealth of Virginia allows fans to display their fandom with a custom WVU plate. The cost for this plate is $25, plus the annual registration fee of $30.75 for a non-electric passenger vehicle weighing 4,000 lbs or less, according to the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.
Delaware
Just about an hour up I-95 lies Delaware, known for its coastline and chemical manufacturing industry. WVU fans have a significant presence in Delaware, with WVU accounting for the highest share percentage of college football tickets sold in Kent County. Delaware offers Mountaineer fans the chance to show their pride through legal registration. The vehicle registration fee in Delaware is $40 annually, with no additional fee for a college tag listed on the Delaware Division of Motor Vehiclesβ website. However, a vanity plate, which college tags may fall under, costs an additional $40 every year.
West Virginia
Back home in the Mountain State, the WVU plate is the most common, given WVUβs large presence across West Virginia. This custom plate is available to Class A vehicles with an active registration for varying costs between $49 and $71.50, depending on the expiration date. Additionally, drivers must be enrolled in the WVU Alumni Association or pay an additional $50 yearly to join the association or donate to the WVU Scholars Program. The yearly renewal fee is $66.50, and all plates expire annually on July 1, according to the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.
