ALDERSON, WV – Alderson’s renowned Fourth of July celebration featured a main event on the Greenbrier River, drawing families and friends to Alderson Mini Park for an exciting day of races and festivities.
Participants eagerly competed in various races, including men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, mother-child, father-child, and the unique six-man no-paddle race. The races aimed to foster community spirit and provide fun for all ages.
Briton Kirby, a member of the Fourth of July committee, emphasized the event’s family-oriented nature. “This is a very family-oriented event. They have events up all evening and we’re gonna have a gospel sing tonight. We’re really excited. It’s gonna be a good day for everybody to bring their family out in good weather and have a good time,” Kirby said.
Despite a minor setback due to weather on Thursday, the committee worked tirelessly to ensure Sunday’s events proceeded smoothly. Kirby expressed pride in the outcome, particularly highlighting the fireworks display. “They turned out really well for us. We’re very proud of our fireworks show, it’s one of the only ground fireworks shows in the state, if not the country,” Kirby noted. “It’s an experience that everybody needs to have and for once in a while to have a free show that people can bring their families out to and not have to break the bank, it’s very important to us.”
The festivities continue with the eagerly anticipated “Ducks on the Greenbrier” event, also held on the Greenbrier River. Tickets for the event will be available until race time at 6 PM on Monday, July 8th.
Kirby acknowledged the dedication and effort required to organize the celebration but affirmed its value to the community. “But we’re glad to do it. We love doing this celebration, we’re gonna keep doing this celebration for as long as we possibly can,” he said.
The Alderson Fourth of July Celebration will officially conclude once the last duck crosses the finish line on the river, marking the end of a memorable and unifying community event.
