With countless dog breeds to choose from, there’s a perfect pup for everyone, from the Beagle to the Boxer, Dachshund to the Siberian Husky, and many more. However, according to Forbes Advisor, four dog breeds stand out as favorites among West Virginians: the Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Boxer.
While the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Boxer typically have an average height of 23 to 24 inches and weigh around 67 to 68 pounds, the Bulldog is a notable exception. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Bulldog reaches around 14 to 15 inches in height and weighs about 50 pounds for males and 40 pounds for females.
Despite their size differences, these breeds share several traits. The AKC notes that Bulldogs, Labradors, and German Shepherds are considered “friendly” dogs, while the Boxer is described as active, bright, and fun-loving—without being any less friendly!
A significant commonality among these breeds is their compatibility with families and young children. Bulldogs, Labs, German Shepherds, and Boxers are all known to be great with families. However, only the Bulldog scores a 3 out of 5 on the AKC’s “good with young children” scale, while the others score a perfect 5.
These four breeds are not only West Virginian favorites but also rank among the top 10 favorite breeds among the 10,000 dog owners surveyed by Forbes Advisor.
