The WVU women’s basketball team announced the addition of a new player on Wednesday.
Feryal Defne Atli of Mersin, Turkey, has joined the Mountaineers under head coach Mark Kellogg.
“We are ecstatic to welcome another adaptable addition to the Defne program,” Kellogg stated. She has a wealth of international experience when she comes to Morgantown. She is an adept post player with the ability to stretch a defense all the way to the three-point line or score with her back to the hoop.
“Defne has a terrific basketball IQ and a nice feel for the game. She will have a long-lasting effect in the post because of her talent for grabbing rebounds.
The 6-foot-3 forward has several years of international championship experience playing for the Turkey National Team.
Atli remarked, “Coach Kellogg and the rest of the coaching staff made me feel really comfortable.” Atli remarked, “This is a great opportunity to play on a championship caliber team.”
At the ISF World Championships in Macao, China, she guided Ari College to a High School National Championship, and her team represented Turkey. With an average of 13.9 points per game, 11.8 rebounds per game, and an 18.8 efficiency rating, Atli dominated the league. She finished the Turkish Championship game with a record-breaking 34 efficiency rate, 20 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks, earning her the title of MVP.
Three seasons in a row, she was the top rebounder in the U19 Turkish League.
