West Virginia Congressman Faces Backlash After Posting Selfie with Inmates in El Salvador Prison

Posted on May 1, 2025

A recent social media post by U.S. Rep. Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia’s 2nd District, has sparked significant controversy. On Tuesday, Moore shared his visit to El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a maximum-security prison that has gained attention due to its involvement in the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man who was mistakenly deported due to an administrative error.

Moore, a vocal ally of former President Donald Trump, posted about his tour of the facility, expressing increased resolve to support Trump’s policies aimed at securing the U.S. border. The post included several photos from his visit, notably two images showing Moore in front of prisoners confined in their cells.

The social media post quickly gained traction, attracting thousands of comments, many of which criticized Moore for sharing such images. Critics described the photos as “disgusting,” “disturbing,” and “insensitive,” questioning the appropriateness of Moore’s actions.

Despite the backlash, Moore has not yet provided further clarification on the purpose of his visit to the prison. He has not addressed the criticism or explained why he chose to post the photos.

Moore is not the only politician to visit the facility recently. Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland is scheduled to tour CECOT on Wednesday, further intensifying the political focus on the prison and its role in the deportation debate.
