The West Virginia Department of Human Services Bureau for Family Assistance has announced that it is now accepting applications for the school clothing allowance program. This initiative provides a $200 benefit to eligible children enrolled in West Virginia schools, which can be used to purchase appropriate school clothing or piece goods for families who sew clothing for their children.
Application Details and Deadline
Applications must be submitted by July 31. Recipients will receive an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card instead of the traditional paper voucher. The EBT card functions like a debit card and can be used at any retailer that accepts EBT transactions. For children in foster care, parents or guardians will receive the benefit as a check.
Eligibility Criteria
The school clothing allowance is automatically provided to:
- Families with school-aged children currently receiving WV WORKS assistance
- Parents or guardians of children in foster care
- Children between the ages of 4-18 who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, are enrolled in school, and whose household income is under 130% of the Federal Poverty Level
These recipients should receive the allowance by the end of June.
Families who received the allowance in 2023 and currently have Medicaid coverage should have received an application by mail in late June. Other families may also be eligible, provided their monthly income for a family of four does not exceed $3,250. Verification of income for July 2024 must be included with the application.
How to Apply
Families can apply online at wvpath.wv.gov. To request a paper application by mail, families can contact their local DoHS county office or the Office of Constituent Services’ Customer Service Center at 1-877-716-1212.
