The West Virginia State Treasurerβs Office has achieved a new milestone, returning nearly $28 million in unclaimed property during the last fiscal year. This figure represents a record amount for the state, according to State Treasurer Riley Moore, who shared the news with 12 News.
Unclaimed property refers to assets that have been inactive for an extended period and are subsequently turned over to the state. Treasurer Moore expressed optimism about surpassing this year’s record, aiming to return up to $90 million by the end of his term.
A significant portion of these unclaimed assets belongs to companies and public institutions. Among the noteworthy returns was a lost trust fund exceeding $1 million, which was restored to Mannington Middle Library. This trust fund was originally established by Dr. Phoebia Moore, one of West Virginia’s pioneering female physicians.
