There are some surprising laws in West Virginia that you might not be aware of.
For example, did you know that swearing in public in West Virginia can result in a fine of one dollar per swear word?
The Mountain State has a number of unusual laws. To learn more about these, 59News visited Beckley.
Attorney Robert Dunlap shared his insights, noting that many outdated laws are still on the books and need to be revised.
βIn my work with municipal law, especially in smaller communities, Iβve encountered even more outrageous regulations. For example, some small cities and towns still adhere to the ‘rule of thumb’ law, which allows beating your wife and children as long as the stick used isnβt wider than your thumb. Itβs incredible how many laws remain unreviewed, uncleaned, and unupdated,β said Dunlap.
Another unusual law in West Virginia makes it illegal to sleep on a train.
These examples highlight a critical issue: how can such outdated laws be addressed? Dunlap explained to 59News that these laws will eventually become obsolete.
βWhen I was the attorney for the City of Rainelle, part of my job was to review and update the ordinance book to ensure the laws werenβt archaic. Itβs crucial for everyone to understand their local laws, how theyβre governed, and recognize how outdated some regulations can be,β Dunlap told 59News.
