As the gun trial against Hunter Biden continues, his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle is set to testify Wednesday in a federal court in Delaware regarding his drug use.
Biden, 54, and Buhle, 55, tied the knot in 1993. Naomi, 30, Maisy, 23, and Finnegan, 23, were the offspring of the couple’s 2016 divorce.
In her memoir “If We Break” published in 2022, Buhle asserted that the breakdown of her marriage to Hunter was caused by his adultery and drug using. Her 2019 lawsuit against Hunter was based on her claims that he owes her money from their breakup, including alimony, legal expenses, interest, and other bills.
Biden wed his present wife, Melissa Cohen, not long after Buhle filed the lawsuit; he is the first child of a sitting U.S. president to face criminal charges.
Biden is facing three charges related to his October 2018 gun purchase. He is accused of deceiving a federally licensed gun dealer, falsifying his drug use status on the application, and illegally possessing the pistol for eleven days.
In the hours leading up to Wednesday’s testimony, the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Courthouse was besieged by a multitude of media tents.
Hallie Biden, the widow of Beau Biden—with whom Hunter had a brief relationship—and Zoe Kestan, Hunter’s ex-girlfriend, were also able to testify before the jury.
The president’s allies are anxious that this trial may affect the president’s health and sobriety, which is a major issue for him as the 2024 presidential election draws near.
What happened in court
Monday was a long day for federal prosecutors as they presented evidence of his drug issue and dishonesty to the jury.
“No one is allowed to lie on a federal form like that, even Hunter Biden,” prosecutor Derek Hines told the jury on Tuesday. “He crossed the line when he chose to buy a gun and lied about a federal background check … the defendant’s choice to buy a gun is why we are here.”
“When the defendant filled out that form, he knew he was a drug addict,” Hines said, adding that prosecutors need not prove that the defendant was using the day he bought the pistol.
An FBI agent testified before the 12-person panel on Tuesday, reading aloud some of Biden’s personal messages—including those from a laptop he left at a repair shop in Delaware and never got back—as part of the opening statements. Leaked to Republicans in 2020, the contents revealed some deeply sensitive details regarding his life and profession. The exposed information has prompted him to file a lawsuit.
When Biden claimed in the application that he did not have a drug problem, his lawyer contended that his client did not think he was addicted.
According to attorney Abbe Lowell’s opening remarks, the defendant did nothing with the pistol during the little period he held it, and it was never loaded.
Throughout most of Tuesday, First Lady Jill Biden and her daughter Ashley Biden occupied the courtroom.
